Most of my life I have always thought of the fruit of the Spirit as being many different fruits. While preparing for an Aglow Meeting suddenly is was like a flash of comprehension. If the Holy Spirit gives us an internal ability to enable us to walk in His Spirit in this godless world ie to truly be as Christ in the world then the Spirit's intention is to make us radically different.
Think on this for a moment. He gives us a FRUIT. One piece of fruit designed to be with us and in us for our whole life. This is the sign we are His by our language, behaviour and actions. It is not His Intention that only some of His Children are meant to be kind, while others are meant to be loving, or good or patient or faithful. ALL in the image of Christ born again should over their lifetimes, display all the segments of the one fruit. That's why sometimes patience often becomes evident in times of trial. (Suffering produces patience).
I don't believe we can 'work towards having any of these fruits singularly. I believe now in ONE fruit with many segments. The Holy Spirit has planted in every born-again believer, this possibility. Not perfection now but what was obtained for us at the Cross. Justified by faith in Christ and all of life ongoing sanctification.
We can't ever make it happen. But if we accept the One Piece of fruit and let God fulfill His Purposes then progressively we are being sanctified, ie perfected - into the image of His Son.
That's why we need daily confession. We should not be saying 'I was very impatient and unloving today' or I just don't have the fruit of patience and love. Our response should perhaps be. 'Father why have I not displayed these inner segments of the Holy Fruit.... Please forgive me and help me to be daily transformed into Your Image. V.24 Help me to 'crucify...self....self's feelings and reactions and grant me that Your Fruit will continue to be transformed and ever grow in my life. A-men.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are for ministry and are many and varied. He gives one or more according to His Holy Purpose.
But, I now passionately believe that The FRUIT God the Holy Spirit gives us inside will be sanctified and changed throughout our lives, as long as we Walk in the Spirit and Live in the Spirit.
He did a mighty work not just salvation, but justification and also on-going sanctification when He died as a covenental sacrifice for us all, at Calvary. At the Cross. IT IS FINISHED.Then, God the Holy Spirit could come to with us and in us in this world.
(Our part is now, that we pick up our own crosses, die to what self wants and be transformed into the One who sacrificed so much.)
